I saw the child carrying Minnie Mouse and immediately thought the juxtaposition between the grittiness of the empty lot and an iconic, cute disney character would be interesting. Another icon – though not as iconic as the Brooklyn Bridge – the Manhattan Bridge stands mightily in the background.

I used trash that was overflowing from a garbage dumpster on Division Street to frame this shot. After having several people walk by, it was this boy’s focused presence that caught my eye.  I got quite a few shots out in Chinatown tonight – more to share in the coming days.

I was captivated by this man’s face. It’s beautiful. And his emotion was heavy, at least to me, which made me want to take his photograph. I followed him a few blocks and eventually said hello in Chinese.  I tried to get him to pose for a picture, but he shied away, not understanding English.
