While it is not uncommon for the Japanese to wear surgical masks – particularly during the winter and spring seasons – to weed out germs, our latest code is a knit hat (or any hat that you can find), glasses and a surgical mask.  Presumably, this protects the skin and lungs against radiation.  So today, as I took a joyful walk in Shibuya on a warm spring day, I came across this fellow (and many more who bore similar outfits). Now, we in Tokyo do not have to worry too much about breathing in dangerous levels of radiation at the moment.  But that does not mean Tokyoites are not taking precautions, including myself (by my wife’s order). Yes, I’m now wearing a surgical mask.
